President Edgar Lungu has been called upon to constitute commission of inquiry into continued misuse of public funds by government ministries and departments.

The Zambian Youths in the fight against Corruption (ZYAFAC) has also praised President Lungu for acting swiftly in relieving Emerine Kabanshi as minister of Community Development following misuse of funds allegations in her ministry.

In an interview with Money FM News in Lusaka, ZYAFAC Executive Director Maurice Malambo says the steps taken by the Head of State clearly shows that he does not tolerate any misuse of funds that are meant to benefit the citizens.

“The firing of Hon Kabanshi is an expression of disapproval of the scam although herself she did not do done anything wrong because the scourge has happened in the department where she is Minister,” he said.

Mr. Malambo also says it is unfair to blame the executive for the mistakes of civil servants who might have embezzled the donor funds saying the action taken by the president is enough in safeguarding the interests of the donor community.

He states that civil servants ought to know that such misuse of donor funds has serious consequences on the development of the country economically and socially.

He has also cautioned against politicizing this matter as the majority Zambians will suffer when the donor funds are frozen for a longer period of time.

Mr. Malambo says it is unfair for the UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema and other opposition political parties to incite the donor community to cut funding to Zambia saying that is being unpatriotic.

“It must also be noted that this is not the first time such a thing is happening, it also happened during the period of late President Dr. Levy Mwanawasa at the Ministry of Health that led to the prosecution of Henry Kapoko and other,” he recalls.

The ZYAFAC Executive Director has since encouraged President Lungu to go a step further in cleaning most of the government ministries to avoid what has happened at the Ministry of Community Development.
