Task Force on illegal Fuel Vending, comprising law enforcement agencies and security wings, facilitated by Energy Regulation Board (ERB), and led by Drug Enforcement Commission, has confiscated 10,050 litres of petroleum products in Lusaka valued at approximately K300, 000.
ERB Acting Manager- Public Relations Lenganji Sikapizye, stated in a statement that during the operation that was conducted on 16th December, 2023, in a continued quest to curb the rampant illegal fuel vending across the country, 22 people were arrested for offences related to illegal fuel dealings, while six pumps were also seized.
Mr. Sikapizye explained that the Task Force will remain resolute and committed to eradicating illegal fuel vending in the country, further warning those engaging in such activities to desist from the vice or face the long arm of the law.
“The Task Force indicates that illegal fuel vending is a vice that deprives the country of the much-needed revenue through tax evasion. In addition, the quality of fuel sold by illegal fuel vendors cannot be guaranteed and can cause damage to engines for motor vehicles and equipment.”
“Further, illegal fuel vending compromises public safety as the fuel is stored in unsafe and undesignated places such as but not restricted to homes and markets. Mishandling and improper storage of fuel at these undesignated places has in the past led to fires with subsequent loss of life and damage to property,” Mr. Sikapizye stated.
He advised motorists and fuel consumers to ensure that they only buy fuel from designated filling stations as these are regularly monitored by the ERB for safety and fuel quality compliance.
“The Task Force has pledged continued partnership with the members of the public who consistently report suspected illegal fuel vending activities,” he added.
