The Zambia Revenue Authority says tax revenue is critical for any country’s fiscal fitness and its sustained economic growth.
ZRA Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda says taxes are important determinants of economic growth, and effective tax administration can significantly increase economic and social welfare.
The ZRA boss said this in Lusaka during the stakeholder engagement workshop with Sherwoodgreen, an agent appointed by ZRA to collect withholding tax on rental income.
“Therefore, the role of tax agents in tax revenue mobilisation is very important. Apart from Sherwoodgreen, ZRA has, so far, also appointed the Zambia National Marketeers Credit Association (ZANAMACA) as its tax agent for the collection of base tax. More agents will be appointed as soon as the procurement processes have been completed,” he disclosed.
”Therefore, engagements such as this with relevant stakeholders is essential in improving tax administration and the development of effective and responsive tax policies.”
Mr. Chanda says it is against this background that ZRA appointed Sherwooodgreen as its tax agent for rental income tax.
He adds that this relationship will ultimately increase the revenue collections from rental income tax.
“This workshop has therefore been organised so that ZRA can be updated on the key milestones that have so far been achieved. The workshop further seeks, to offer solutions to the challenges that have been encountered in the implementation process. It is gratifying to note that this Sherwoodgreen is already on the ground working and the results are already being seen,” said Mr. Chanda.
He says a vibrant and efficient domestic tax system is the cornerstone of national development.
Mr. Chanda has disclosed that implementation of the Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDS) for all taxpayers registered for consumption taxes and turnover tax.
