UK, WWF partner to support Zambia’s climate work

• UK Government and WWF both support key priorities of prominence in Zambia around promotion of climate smart agriculture.
• There is great need for all actors in the economy to drive a just transition to climate resilient.
• This new partnership will build on the Climate Connection campaign launched by the British Council on 3rd June to strengthen UK-Zambia collaborations

United Kingdom (UK), and Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) have signed a new partnership agreement to collaborate and support climate and environmental work in Zambia.

In a statement issued to Money FM News, British High Commissioner to Zambia, Nicholas Woolley said for many nations, including Zambia, building resilience to the impacts of climate change and support for adaptation to clean, green development pathways are of central importance.

Mr. Wooley said the UK Government and WWF both support key priorities of prominence in Zambia around promotion of climate smart agriculture and a diversified renewable energy mix.

“We look forward to this next stage of working together and developing ways to apply our relative skills and expertise to support climate and environment action here in Zambia in this pivotal year of COP26,” he said.

Further, WWF Zambia Country Director, Nachilala Nkombo says this strategic partnership is one way of supporting increase in public awareness and engagement by all sectors of the country on much needed efforts towards building a green and resilient economy that will secure the future of Zambia’s growing population.

Ms. Nkombo stated that, “The consequences of climate change in several parts of the country have been witnessed through food insecurity, unpredictability of water availability, rising temperatures, increased loss of forest cover, increasing land cover changes and loss of our biological diversity.”

“We cannot afford to let this to further slide,” she said

Ms. Nkombo pointed out that that there is great need for all actors in the economy to drive a just transition to climate resilient, low carbon, sustainable, and resilient economy for the betterment of the nation and planet at large.

According to a Press Release from the British High Commission Lusaka, “As part of the British High Commission’s engagement in Zambia, this new partnership will build on the Climate Connection campaign launched by the British Council on 3rd June to strengthen UK-Zambia collaborations and use our cultural and educational resources to improve awareness, share ideas, and empower young people to act on climate change.”

This also follows the successful launch of WWF’s Voices for Climate Action Programme in the Kafue Flats on 19th May, also attended by the UK High Commissioner.
