US$18m Zesco project in Eastern Province vandalized

ZESCO Limited says 31 towers have been vandalized in Eastern Province under a project that is linking Lundazi and Chama to the National Grid for the first time.
ZESCO National Spokesperson Henry Kampata says he could not immediately tell the total cost of the vandalized towers but says the entire project is being carried out at a cost of US$18 million.
He has disclosed that the earthing was stolen from the towers and the affected areas are Chipata, Lundazi and Chama districts.
He says in a telephone interview with Money FM News that the theft occurred in the past week.
Mr. Kampata has bemoaned the development saying that the project which was supposed to finish in the first quarter of 2020 will now be prolonged.
He has since noted that the power utility company will engage with scrap metal dealers to caution them against buying any such installations as they are perceived to be the buyers of the Vandalized installations.
