• Unofficial COVID 19 herbal medicine seized.
• ZAMRA has not ascertained the quality or safety of the medicine in question.
• Public to be wary of unscrupulous people who sell unauthorized COVID drugs.
Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has seized a consignment of unauthorized herbal medicine called Lianhua Qingwen Jiaonang capsules (LH24) from a clinic in Lusaka, operated by a person of Chinese origin.
According to a statement made available to Money FM, Senior Public Relations Officer Christabel Mutale Iliamupu says this was done through its routine inspection and monitoring (post marketing surveillance) activities.
“Investigations have since been instituted pending further regulatory action in accordance with the Medicines and Allied Substances Act No.3 of 2013,” The statement said.
She added that the authority has not ascertained the quality, safety, and efficacy of LH24 and LH36 or any other medical products for treatment or management of COVID-19.
“The authority wishes to issue a stern warning to all those placing unauthorized medical products for diagnosis, prevention, treatment or management of COVID 19 or any other condition to refrain from doing so or risk being prosecuted by law,” the statement read.
She has advised the public to be cautious with individuals who sell medical products alleged to prevent COVID.
“Members of the public should be wary of unscrupulous, selfish individuals who swindle unsuspecting persons for unverified medical products purported to prevent or treat COVID-19,” The statement added.
She said the authority would continue conducting their surveillance activities and all those found wanting would be prosecuted in accordance with the provision of the law.
