Zesco Limited says it has extended the amnesty period for consumers involved in illegal power connections to 31st May, 2023.
Zesco Senior Manager- Corporate Affairs, Caristo Chitamfya said in a statement that the decision to extend the amnesty period is aimed at encouraging consumers to declare the illegal connections to enable the utility clean up the system in order to improve on service delivery.
Mr. Chitamfya however observed that there has been a tremendous increase in the number of people declaring illegal connections since the first amnesty period was effected.
He said this is an indication that customers recognize and appreciate Zesco’s intention to normalize the illegal power connections.
“We have given customers a second chance to normalize their electricity connections. We do acknowledge that some customers live in illegally connected homes or operating illegally connected shops, may not even be the main culprits because they may just be renting as tenants, therefore Zesco knows who to deal with.”
“Anybody involved in illegal power connections is not only limiting our capacity to connect more people to the national grid but also defrauding Zesco out of revenue meant to expand the business,” Mr. Chitamfya stated.
He said during the amnesty period, Zesco will normalize connections with affected customers and effective 1st June, all those found with illegal connections will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
On 4th April 2023, ZESCO Limited gave a 30 day amnesty to all those that have illegal electricity connections to report to the power utility or face prosecution.
