The Zambia National Framers Union ZNFU has attributed the low wheat production in the 2017/2019 farming season to the low rainfall the season experienced.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News ZNFU Spokesperson Calvin Kaleyi says the less rainfall that was experienced in the season negatively on the crop production.
Mr Kaleyi says wheat farmers are doing their best to produce the crop adding that they are able to produce about 300 thousand metric tonnes.
He says the union does not expect huge imports of wheat products because that will affect the wheat farming in the country.
He says from the time the statutory instrument was signed in 2009 against the importation of wheat products the country has seen been recording increased wheat produce.
“There is need for the government to continue supporting the wheat sector so that the country can continue to be wheat sufficient,” he said.
The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) is anticipate a shortage of wheat on the market due to reduced production in the last farming season.
