The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) says Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) needs a full recapitalization and not partial revamping to make it a viable company.
ZNFU Spokesperson Calvin Kaleyi tells Money FM News that even these issues of importation of fertilizer into the country will be a thing of the past.
Mr. Kaleyi has opposed calls for government to construct the new ammonium plant at NCZ saying the structures and equipment are there that just needs capital injection.
He says the company needs full rehabilitation to make it more viable.
He says unless the equipment at this company is in a dilapidated state, it just needs capital injection for it to operate competitively and not constructing a new plant.
Mr. Kaleyi contends that it is costly to come up with such a company from the scratch and hence the need to revamp the already existing structure.
Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe last week told parliament that government wants to revamp Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia at a total cost of US$50 million.
