ZRA to continue engaging DRC over the situation at Kasumbalesa

The Zambia Revenue Authority says it will continue engaging the Democratic Republic of Congo over the slow entry of traffic into Congo at Kasumbalesa Border post.
ZRA Commissioner Customs Sydney Chibbabbuka says the movement of traffic at Kasumbalesa has been affected by the construction works being undertaken in Congo to expand the parking yard at the border and the road rehabilitation works on the road to Lubumbashi.
Mr. Chibbabbuka says the only a single lane has been left for use at the moment.
Mr. Chibbabbuka states that businesses are also buying in bulk to stock up in anticipation of the industrial break and election period.
He says the recent increase in parking fees on the Congolese side has created anxiety among drivers and transporters but the new fees have since been suspended and traffic is currently flowing.
“The Zambia Revenue Authority has taken positive steps in addressing the situation together with authorities in Congo by increasing border operating hours from 18:00hrs to 22:00hrs on both sides. The Zambian Authorities have increased staffing levels and have continued reviewing customs clearance procedures during this period to expedite movement of traffic,” he said.
He has urged transporters to use Mukambo border as an option especially for trucks exiting the Congo into Zambia.
He further advises all transporters to take extra caution and continue monitoring the situation in Congo before dispatching their trucks because they may end creating unnecessary congestion at the Zambian border which may also create a serious public health risk.
