2021 General Elections nomination fees adjusted upwards

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has adjusted nomination fees for all candidates wishing to contest the 2021 General Elections.
Speaking during the ECZ Political Parties Liaison Committee meeting, Commission Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu disclosed that the Commission has also adjusted the time-table for all activities leading to the 2021 General Elections.

Justice Chulu further said preparations for the 2021 Elections will be done ahead of the voting date which is August 12, 2021, stating that the commission has no mandate to postpone a general election as the voting date is enshrined in the constitution.
According to the proposed fees, Male Presidential candidates will now be required to pay K150, 000 from K60, 000 while female Presidential Candidates and persons with disabilities will pay K120, 000 from K60, 000.
Male parliamentary candidates will be required to pay K25, 000 from K7, 500 with female candidates, youths and persons with disabilities expected to pay K20, 000 from K7, 500.
For Mayors, male candidates will now pay K25, 000 from K7, 500 while female candidates, youths and persons with disabilities will pay K20, 000 from K7, 500.
At Council Chairperson Level, male Candidates will be required to pay K10, 000 from K2, 500 while Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities will be required to pay K7, 500 from 2,500.
He assured the nation that the commission will continue to engage the treasury to ensure that adequate funds are made available for the country’s important exercise.
Meanwhile, Justice Chulu emphasized that voter registration is one of the key ingredients for credible elections, hence a new voter register will ensure a realistic voter turnout, accurate election planning and logistics.
He said the registration of voters will increase stakeholder confidence and credibility of the electoral process adding that the commission will ensure that over 4 million ineligible voters that have been become eligible since 2016 are registered.
“The commission’s 2018-2022 strategic plan focuses on having an accurate and up to date register of voters. I want to emphasize that voter registration, is one of the key ingredients for the conduct of credible elections,” he said.
Justice Chulu also urged those who wish to contest the 2021 elections to start preparations now by putting the necessary documents together as this will allow them to successfully file in their nominations.
