Machinery hindering women miners

The Association of Zambian Women in Mining says sourcing for equipment remains a key challenge women in mining are facing in the country.
Association Information Publicity Secretary Gertrude Phiri says women in mining are finding it difficult to source for equipment or even hiring it saying it is quite expensive.
The Association of Zambian Women in Mining Information Publicity Secretary was speaking to Money FM Business Radio crew last evening in Lusaka during the outside broadcasting event on Taxation in partnership with the British Chamber of Commerce Zambia.
She said women in mining are eager to increase mining production but they are incapacitated as a result of lack of proper equipment.
Ms Phiri said it is also encouraging that a Task Force has been set up by the Ministry of Mines to look at taxation issues affecting women.
“Last month we met the Head of State (President Edgar Lungu), where we highlighted that we are taxed just like other giant mines. The President of course promised us that this matter will be looked at in order to motivate us in increasing production,” she said.
Ms Phiri added that there is a suggestion to put women in mining in clusters or zones in order to increase production.
