Govt tipped to introduce “cleaning levy”

A youth led think-tank working to improve the living standards of young people, has maintained that government should introduce cleaning levy as a way of dealing with street vending.
Clarence Skills Enterprise Executive Director Clarence Muzyamba has advised government to regulate street vending and introduce a cleaning levy.
Mr. Muzyamba says the government should identify certain streets where traders can trade from with improved sanitation facilities.
He argues that street vending is taking place across the world including developed countries.
He says what is needed in the case of Zambia is having improved sanitation facilities so that traders can trade freely and earn a living.
“Zambia’s poverty levels remain high and we have a chance as a country to reduce these levels. This can only be done if we support traders, SMEs and other businesses. This will help us as a country in terms of job creation thereby reducing the high poverty levels,” he said.
