Accountability Advocacy calls for prudent use of SDRs

• Accountability is key.

Accountability Advocacy Zambia has called for prudent use of the 1.3 billion US dollars that has been allocated to Zambia by International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the Special Drawings Rights (SDRs).
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Advocacy Executive Director Luchembe Chilufya said relevant authorities must ensure that the resources address the challenges being experienced in the country.
Mr. Chilufya noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the economy, especially small scale businesses, therefore the need to see to it the money is used for the intended purpose.
“This is not the first time that Zambia is receiving support from these Agencies and donors for the Covid-19 fight and mitigation. As an organization, we have always asked government to use these resources prudently and ensure that they address the challenges the country has been facing. Covid-19 has had a negative impact on small scale businesses, but even the big businesses of course,” Mr. Chilufya said.
He stated that it is also important to provide a conducive environment for people to survive the pandemic.
“It is therefore important that as government utilizes these resources, it must ensure that it enables the Zambian people to do their businesses and also to ensure that a conducive environment is created for people to survive the pandemic. Accountability is key for these resources,” he added.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a general allocation of Special Drawings Rights (SDRs) equivalent to 650 billion US dollars to boost global liquidity.
The funds are meant to help developing countries that have struggled to cope with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and Zambia has been allocated 1.3 billion US dollars as part of the SDRs.
