Action Aid Zambia has advised the government to be transparent in the management of the toll fees raked from various toll points across the country.
The organization is of the view that Zambians feels as if they are robbed through the payment of toll fees as the state through the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA), Road Development Agency (RDA) and other institutions are unable to plough back to the maintenance of the roads.
Action Aid Zambia Country Director Nalucha Ziba says according to the legislative framework, funds raked from toll gates should not be taken to Control 99 as reviewed by the government recently.
Ms Ziba says the whole essence of toll fees is to maintain the roads but that the people do not feel the government is doing enough in the maintenance of roads despite them collecting huge sums of money through toll gates.
She says there are a number of economical roads that need urgent attention such as the Kafue – Mazabuka Road which she says is a death trap.
She has since called on the government to ensure that these fees are managed well in a transparent and accountable manner.
