Agriculture sector still at its infant stage – SAFADA

• Despite World Bank support, better results cannot be concluded.
• The industry is still at its infant stage.
• Farming community still lagging behind in terms of technology and innovations.

Small scale Farmers Development Agency (SAFADA) says despite the World Bank supporting the agriculture sector, trade and agribusiness in the county, better results cannot be concluded because the industry is still at its infant stage and the farming community is still lagging behind in terms of technology and innovations.
Organization Executive Director Boyd Moobwe tells Money FM News in a statement, that the agriculture, marketing and trading policies and systems are not supportive; hence the business relationship between stakeholders is not up to date.
Mr. Moobwe said it can be ideal for the World Bank to support the farming community through existing farmer based organizations in order to ensure that the farming community advance in agriculture activities, agribusiness and trade.
“Although World Bank has supported agriculture, trade and agribusiness we cannot conclude better results because the industry is still at its infant stage and the farming community is still lagging behind in terms of technology and innovations,” he said.
“Zambia is still lipping and facing serious economic, social and political challenges alluding to high levels of poverty.”
Mr Moobwe however said the ranking of Zambia as third out of 28 countries in Sub Saharan Africa performing well in agriculture and agribusiness due to enabling environment and good policies needs further clarifications based on economic and social indicators that give evidence of sustainable agriculture and agribusiness development and growth.
