The Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia has appealed to the government to work on the stretch from Serenje through Mpika to Nakonde along the Great North Road.
The Road Development Agency (RDA) in September last year signed two contracts for the rehabilitation of the Great North Road from Chinsali to Nakonde in Muchinga Province.
Lot 1, from Chinsali to Isoka, a 103 kilometre stretch was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Limited at a contract sum of K 785, 773, 382. 49 and Lot 2, with a stretch of 107 from Isoka to Nakonde was awarded to China Railway Seventh Group Co. Zambia Limited at a contract sum of K713, 866, 768.53.
PTAZ Chief Executive Officer Benson Tembo tells Money FM News that it is not a secret that this stretch on this important road that connects Zambia to East Africa is in a bad state.
Mr. Tembo says truckers are spending a lot of time on this stretch which is increasing on their turnaround time thereby eroding their much needed income.
“These truckers who are paying toll fees every day to contribute to the repairs of the roads in Zambia to bring about sustainable growth and increase efficiency in the supply chain,” he said.
Mr. Tembo states that truckers both local and foreign have resorted to diverting their trucks through Kasama route which has no provision for the weigh bridge.
Mr. Tembo has since called on the government to urgently work on the road because of its importance in the transport sector.
