Zambia Livestock Cooperative Union (ZLCU) says the ban on transportation of pigs from one place to another due to African swine fever has negatively affected business for Livestock farmers.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Union Director Elias Nkhuwa said business for pigs has slowed down due to the ban which has led to the shortage of pigs on the local market.
Mr. Nkhuwa however stated that in as much as farmers will lose out on business, the ban is welcome as it will help limit the disease from spreading.
“We welcome the ban of transporting pigs from one place to another because the African swine fever is highly contagious which can infect a number of animals if left unattended,” he said
He called on Government to quickly find a solution to the African swine fever in order for business to go back to normal.
He explained that African swine fever is a contagious haemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, responsible for serious production and economic losses due to its high mortality rate and it is caused by a DNA virus of the Asfarviridae family.
African swine fever has broken out in the six districts of Lusaka Province and Provincial Veterinary Officer Patricia Bwalya disclosed on Saturday that all movement of pigs, pig products and any by-products within the region have since been banned.
