Government cancels World NGO Day celebrations

• Planned delayed celebration of the Day is no longer practical and achievable.
• The commemoration will no longer take place in 2022.
• The inconvenience caused by the non-celebration of the launched World NGO Day is regretted.

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services has announced that the planned delayed commemoration of the World Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) day will no longer take place in 2022.
In a statement, Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Beatrice Chilufya said the commemoration which was supposed to take place on Sunday 27th March 2022, was postponed to a later date in order to address concerns raised by some NGOs.
Ms. Chilufya stated that it is the Ministry’s considered view that the planned delayed celebration of the Day is no longer practical and achievable because the NGO Council dissolved the organizing committee as a reaction to the postponement and made refunds to stakeholders that had made financial commitments to some activities of that day.
“Celebrations and other associated activities which were planned to take place on Sunday 27th March, 2022 could not take place due to concerns brought forward by some NGOs. As a result, the Ministry announced the postponement of the celebrations to a later date to be communicated for purposes of addressing the concerns which were raised by some NGOs,” Ms. Chilufya said.
She added that the Ministry in collaboration with the Council of NGOs and other stakeholders will immediately commence preparations for the country’s participation during the 2023 World NGO Day, while other avenues will be explored to ensure NGOs in the country are provided with opportunities to interact and showcase their works within this year.
“The inconvenience caused by the non-celebration of the launched World NGO Day is regretted,” she stated.
On 26th February 2022, Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba launched the commemoration of the World NGO day for the first time in Zambia.
