The Disability Rights Watch has expressed shock and dismay that the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission last year allocated 1% of their projects to people living with disabilities.
The Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) last week said in order to enhance participation of youth, women and the disabled in empowerment programmes, of the 2,988 projects funded by the Commission since 2008 to date, it has allocated 62% of the projects to youth, women and the disabled.
CEEC Director General Likando Mukumbuta said with 34% of the projects going to women, 27% to youths and 1% to the disabled.
But Disability Rights Watch Programmes Coordinator Bruce Chooma tells Money FM News that people living with disabilities too have the potential and capacity to do business.
Mr. Chooma said this shows that people living with disabilities are sidelined and left behind.
He said this is against the Seventh National Development Plan whose objectives is not leaving anyone behind.
Mr. Chooma stated that the one percent allocated to people living with disabilities is very annoying and that CEEC should consider increasing the percentage of people living with disabilities accessing loans.
