World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Zambia says it is not satisfied that a large part of Zambia’s population is dependent on Charcoal as their energy source.

Speaking during signing of a memorandum of understanding in Lusaka with Copperbelt University, WWF Country Director Nachilala Nkombo says as part of its objectives in the new national strategic plan on conservation being launched, the Organisation wants to look at how to support the scaling up of renewable energy in the country.

Ms. Nkombo noted other objectives in the plan include driving wild life forest and fresh water ecosystems as well as support from government to set up the foundation of green economy.

Ms. Nkombo raised hope that the Media will also partner with WWF in the new national strategic plan on conservation.

“We are focusing on three main areas that are also aligned to the global conservation objectives of WWF,” said Ms. Nkombo.

She indicated that the Organisation will also continue with the context of the partnership the Organisation has had before with CBU.

And Copperbelt University Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Chisale said the signing ceremony is a symbolic in many aspects of the commitment that CBU and WWF attaches to the resources.

Professor Chisale noted the partnership is meant to catalyze the economy “and above all to create a better life for our people.”

The MOU signed by World Wide Fund and Copperbelt University of establishing a Kafue River Research Center is aimed to galvanize efforts and linkages for the establishment of the Kafue river catchment research and training institute.
