Chipangali District Farmers Association has called on government to consider finding a market for onion farmers in Eastern province.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Association Chairperson Davy Kapwata said there is a lot of good quality onion in Eastern Province but lack of market is the major challenge that farmers are facing.
Mr. Kapwata stated that the other challenge is that onion is currently selling at its lowest price, making it difficult for farmers to make profits.
“As at now, we have a lot of onions in Eastern Province but the challenge is that we don’t have a market the farmers are complaining that they want a market, so if there could be a way which government can actually help us market these products.”
“Remember the chain stores kept on complaining that there is no onion in the country but right now we have a lot of onions so we are appealing to the government to see how best we can be helped. It’s either exporting or maybe talking to chain stores to see how best they can be buying from us, we have good quality onions anytime they want it we have it,” Mr. Kapwata said.
He appealed to government to see how best to help the farmers find a readily available market for their produce.
“As we speak right now, onion is at its lowest price, so those are some of the challenges we are actually facing. The prices are too low so we want to see how best the government can help us,” he added.
