The National Association for Medium and Small Scale Contractors (NAMSSC) has urged government through the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure to ensure that constructors under the 20 percent constructing policy do not lose out on projects even as government scales down the implementation of construction activities.
Association President Mutale Mpepo explained to Money FM News, that the scaling down of construction projects in the Country will mean that even sub-contractors will have to adjust with how much work they have to conduct on a project under the 20 percent constructing policy.
“The scaling down of projects should be a win, win situation, so that local contractors do not lose out, if it means to scale down every contractor participating in constructing activities should feel the effects of the scale down,” Mr Mpepo said.
Mr Mpepo added that due to scaled down construction activities, some roads that were expected to be up graded into bituminous standard will remain gravel roads a situation that will see contractors under the 20 percent constructing policy adjust their work.
“Like contractors under the 20 percent constructing policy, it will mean they will have to adjust, because 20 percent of the bituminous standard is quite high compared to 20 percent of gravel roads,” he said.
He further said the reduction in construction projects has also resulted in the sector to under-perform financially so far this year.
