The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) says it has begun to see an increase in the flow of traffic at the Chirundu border post following the opening of the border by neighboring Zimbabwe.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Authority Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda has however clarified that Zambia did not close its borders but it was the neighboring sides that did so, a situation that affected revenue collection and traffic flows at the entry points.
“Zambia did not close its borders even Chirundu border was not closed, it was open throughout but our counterparts in other Countries had locked down as a result affecting traffic flow on the entry point,” Mr Sikalinda said.
Mr Sikalinda adds that the implementation of lockdowns by neighboring countries resulted in reduced traffic flows at Chirundu border post as well as other entry points across the country.
“Generally there was a bit of reduction in traffic flows at the entry point during the time the neighboring countries implemented the lock down, but we have seen that traffic has started to pick up again,” he said.
Early this month, Zambia Revenue Authority Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda announced that Chirundu border will with immediate effect start operating 24-7 while Nakonde border post also resumed the normal 24-7 as before the shutdown.

Mr Chanda said the Authority is working with other Government Agencies to ensure that travelers and the general public are served in an efficient manner and reduce congestion at the borders.
