The Ministry of health says the country has surpassed the 50, 000 cases mark after recording 1, 408 new positive cases in the last 24 hours with 17 deaths.
Speaking to the media during the Covid-19 status update, Health Minister Dr. Jonas Chanda the positive cases are out of 13, 524 tests conducted bringing the cumulative number of cases since March last year to 50, 319.
Dr. Chanda said of the cases recorded, 456 are from Lusaka, 231 from Copperbelt, 186 in North Western, 144 from Southern, 109 in Muchinga, 77 in Western, 75 from Eastern, 60 from Luapula, 47 in Northern and 23 from Central provinces.
He added that 10 of the mortalities recorded have been classified as Covid-19 deaths, two are covid-19 associated while five are pending to be classified.
The Minister said that of the deaths recorded, eight are from the Copperbelt, seven from Lusaka while Central and Eastern provinces recorded one mortality each.
Dr. Chanda reviewed that the country currently has 6, 844 active cases with 6, 345 under community management while 500 are admitted in health facilities of which 347 patients are under oxygen therapy and 50 in critical condition.
The Minister has since cautioned schools and higher learning institutions that will open on the 1st of February to strictly adhere to Covid-19 regulations in order to avoid closure.
