Nsama, Kaunda alleged shooter identified

• Suspect in the shooting of the two citizens has been identified.
• Investigations were instituted to establish what happened on the material day.
• Government is implementing measures to prevent such occurrences.

Minister of Home Affairs says the suspect who is alleged to have fired the gunshot that left two citizens dead last month has been identified.
Speaking when he delivered a ministerial statement in parliament over the shooting incident in Lusaka that resulted in the death of two citizens, Stephen Kampyongo says investigations were instituted which included summoning and interviewing commanders and officers who were on the ground on the material day.
“Following the unfortunate incident which resulted in the death of two citizens, investigations were instituted which included; identifying witnesses who could have seen what transpired, crime scene visitations and subjecting firearms used during the operation for ballistic examinations as well as subjecting the two bodies of the deceased persons to a postmortem which established that the two died of fatal bullet wounds,” he said
“The house may wish to note that the team tasked to investigate this matter has already concluded its investigations and the suspect who is alleged to have fired the gunshot that led to the death of Mr. Nsama Chipyoka and Mr. Joseph Kaunda has since been identified.”
The minister said the report has been forwarded to the President who has studied the report and handed it over to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further action.
“At the same time, the Zambia Police Service has also forwarded the docket of the case to the Director of Public Prosecution,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Kampyongo said in order to prevent further loss of life during such occurrences, government is implementing measures such as the re-training of police officers on the recently acquired specialized equipment for effective crowd management.
The minister has further warned the Zambia police officers that government will not shield them from justice when they choose to take the law into their own hands.
“To the police officers, I wish to warn that no one is above the law, the long arm of the law will visit you regardless of your position or status in the service,” he said.
The minister has encouraged police officers to exhibit high levels of professionalism and discipline when dealing with members of the public.
