CSO-SUN urges government to prioritize nutrition financing

• Nutrition should be the main priority of government’s development agenda.
• Previous years have shown that Zambia remains lowest when it comes to financing food and nutrition activities.
• Stunting and malnutrition are claiming a lot of lives especially for children under the age of five.

Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) Alliance says Zambia remains the lowest country with regards to financing food and nutrition related activities.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Organization Country Coordinator Mathews Mhuru noted that this is because government ministries that are supposed to contribute to ending malnutrition do not have the ability to do so due to limited resources.
Mr. Mhuru urged government to ensure that Nutrition is the main priority of their development agenda, noting that stunting and malnutrition are claiming a lot of lives especially for children under the age of five.
“Investing in nutrition is one of the things that we would want to bring to the attention of the new government. Nutrition should be the main priority of their development agenda. Previous years have shown that Zambia remains the lowest country when it comes to financing food and nutrition related matters,” Mr. Mhuru said.
He added that government must see to it that nutrition financing meets the criteria that have been put in place in order for the country to be food and nutrition secure.
“We would like to urge the UPND government to ensure that the financing to nutrition activities meets the criteria that has been put in place for Zambia to be food and nutrition secure because stunting and malnutrition are claiming a lot of lives especially for children who are under the age of five,” he stated.
