Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has seized 40 kilogrammes of a psychotropic substance, namely amphetamine, after clamping down on an organised drug trafficking network in the country.
Commission Public Relations Officer Hussein Khan said the move has led to the arrest of one Zambian identified as Timothy Muchindu 29, who was nabbed in a special operation conducted at one of the shopping malls in Lusaka.
Mr. Khan explained that amphetamine is primarily a drug of abuse and is highly addictive.
“The Commission has charged Timothy Muchindu aged 29 for Trafficking in Psychotropic Substances contrary to section 15 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021 of the Laws of Zambia. Muchindu was nabbed in a special operation conducted at one of the shopping malls in Lusaka.”
“Amphetamine is a psychotropic substance and is listed under the third schedule of the Act. It is primarily a drug of abuse and is highly addictive. It is manufactured in clandestine laboratories mostly in Europe and Asia and smuggled into the Republic by organised criminal networks,” Mr. Khan stated.
He added that the seizure of amphetamine is the biggest in the Commission’s history but that it is also a worrying sign as it shows the development of a new trafficking trend where the drug is illegally imported from the place of manufacture to East Africa and finally into Zambia.
“The Commission would like to inform the public that it is on high alert and is cooperating with local and foreign law enforcement agencies in its quest to proactively curb the illicit drug problem in the country,” he said.
