Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) and Lusaka City Council (LCC) have seized assorted products valued around K88,260 for not adhering to applicable compulsory standards.
In a joint statement, the two institutions said the seized products include 74 bottles of assorted portable spirits, 30 boxes of assorted portable spirits, 273 toilet soap, 102 assorted spices and 270 assorted food items.
And Council Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba stated that the assorted products were seized from Ming Hui Supermarket in Lusaka’s Industrial Area along Mungwi Road for being labeled in foreign language only while others had either expired or were not labeled.
“Further, Ming Hui Supermarket supplied on the market products covered by compulsory standards without authority from ZCSA. The infringed laws are Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017, Public Health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia and the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019,” Ms. Mwamba said.
She added that the assorted products have since been withdrawn from the market, and will be disposed off as prescribed by the law.
Meanwhile, ZCSA Head of Communications Brian Hatyoka warned that the two institutions will not hesitate to take stern action against entities which are in a habit of importing and selling products on the market without complying with various laws of Zambia.
Mr. Hatyoka said unregulated products pose a risk to the safety and health of consumers.
“In this regard, the two institutions will continue conducting enforcement activities in a bid to ensure only safe products are allowed on the market. Consumers are also urged to buy products from reputable sources and report suspicious products on the market.”
“The two institutions will also continue conducting public education for the public to know what to look out for in products,” he stated.
