Dry spells have not affected power generation – Zesco

• Power generation is not yet being negatively affected.
• No adjustments have been made with regards to load management.
• The impact of this rainfall season is in the next cycle.

Zesco Limited says erratic rainfall being experienced in some parts of the country has not affected power generation capacity.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Company Corporate Affairs Director Dr. John Kunda stated that the power utility firm has not made any adjustments with regards to load management because generation is being done normally.
Dr. Kunda said the impact of this rainfall season is in the next cycle because 2020’s projections and power allocations were based on last year’s rainfall pattern, adding that Zambezi River Authority may revise the allocation depending on the inflows into the reservoir.
“Power generation is not yet being negatively affected and no adjustments have been made, we are generating normally. The impact of this rainfall season is in the next cycle because last year’s projections and allocations were based on the rainfall that we had last year until the end of December and beginning of January then the Zambezi River Authority may revise the allocation depending on the inflows into the reservoir,” Dr. Kunda said.
He added that at the moment, Zesco Limited does not have any revisions in terms of load management.
And Dr. Kunda said if erratic rainfall persists, catchment areas for power generation may not receive more inflows and this may be worrying for the future.
“In future we have to worry because if this continues it means that we won’t receive more inflows moving forward, and if we don’t receive a lot of inflows especially the catchment areas for power generation which are Western and North-western provinces, then we are worried for the future but not now,” he added.
Lately, some parts of the country have been experiencing dry spells, with some stakeholders fearing that the situation might negatively affect agricultural production in 2022.
However, Zambia Meteorological Department has projected an increase in rainfall activities across the country from 14th December 2021.
