Economic benefits of Tobacco production vs Health effects of Tobacco consumption.

The Centre for Trade Policy and Development has Observed that there is a conflict between the Economic benefits of Tobacco production and the Health effects of Tobacco consumption.
CTPD Head of Research Brian Mwiinga says over 7000 people lose their lives Annually due to consumption in Zambia.
He has emphasized the need to curtail consumption before it begins among the youth.
According to Zambia Revenue Authority figures, the country has earned has earned approximately one hundred and fifty million Kwacha worth from tobacco trade in the country.
The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has noted that stopping the production of Tobacco due to the health implications it has would devastate the global economy.
Dr. Swebby Macha tells Money FM News that the tobacco industry is big and has a big number of players.
He therefore says public awareness on the matter has to be increased to ensure that players make independent decisions over the use of the products.
A report has indicated that Zambia can save up to 12.4 billion Kwacha in the next 15 years by investing in tobacco control.
Centre for Advocacy and Research on Tobacco lead Researcher Chris Zimba says up to 40 thousand deaths can be prevented in the same period of time.
Mr. Zimba says the country is however not performing well especially in controlling tobacco by increasing prices and Taxes on the Commodity.
