A Lusaka based economic analyst says the proposed operation of bars and nightclubs in Lusaka to operate on a takeaway basis will see a reduction in the production and consumption of goods consumed in these places.
In an interview with Money FM, Shabdin Mweemba says this move can be extended to other sectors of the economy if the Ministry of Health sees an increase in the cases which in turn will affect the economy.
“If the Ministry of Health notices an increase in the cases, they might extend the closure to other sectors in the economy which will affect the kwacha further,” he said.
Mr. Mweemba said bar owners need to come up with creative and innovative ways of conducting their businesses such as collecting a database of their customers and facilitate door to door deliveries.
“It is important for bar owners to start delivering to their customers and make more sales other than wait for people to come and to takeaways,” he said.
“At this point, the bar owners should try to diversify to see where there’s demand which will help them remain relevant in the business.”
Mr. Mweemba further added that locking down Lusaka would be a good move owing to the pronouncement that the city is the epicenter of the virus which will help reduce the spread and preserve life.
The economist has since advised the public to make use of the electronic platforms made available by business organizations to avoid direct contact with people and physical handling of money.
