The Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) has recommended for the demolition of the Alick Nkhata Road Flyover Bridge, calling for the construction of a new redesigned road section to be built.
In a statement issued to Money FM News, Institute Registrar and Chief Executive Officer Linus Chanda said the institute arrived at the decision following the review of the design and construction of the Bridge after engagements with stakeholders involved on the project.
“The EIZ therefore, recommends that the bridge be demolished and a new redesigned road section be constructed,” Mr. Chanda said.
Mr Chanda noted that the in-depth analysis of the intended purpose of the Bridge and its design and construction has established that space where the facility has been constructed is not sufficient to meet a well-designed fly over bridge standard specification.
“EIZ has undertaken a review of the design and construction of the bridge after engagements with all stakeholders involved on the project through an in-depth analysis of intended purpose of the bridge’s design and construction,” he explained.
Mr Chanda added that the assessments conducted prior to under taking the project do not justify the construction of the Flyover Bridge.
He further said that the safety of the pedestrians was not adequately addressed.
Mr Chanda further observed that the steep slopes of the bridge may lead to frequent accidents, because the sudden slop change on the deck of the ramp will eventually be affecting the integrity of the facility.
