Electricity tariff increment significant.

An Energy Expert says the increase in electricity tariffs is significant although some charges that Zesco wanted to be included have been rejected by the Energy Regulation Board.

Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Johnson Chikwanda said the increase was expected because for a long time the tariff in Zambia does not make business logic to attract significant investment needed in the sector.

“To be honest, this was expected because for a long time the tariff in Zambia does not make business sense to attract significant investment needed in the energy sector” Chikwanda said.
Mr Chikwanda said the decision taken by ERB is needed for the long term survival of the sector although it’s not any easy decision for consumers to accept.
“Although it’s a bitter pill to swallow by the consumers, is it needed for the long term survival of the sector” He said.

He adds that the situation is being compounded by expensive power imports and power procurements from independent power producers.
Mr Chikwanda further said going forward, it can be expected that the tariff will still go up, therefore, households are strongly encouraged to use electricity prudently and only when it is necessary.
“Households are encouraged to reduce 100%  dependence on Zesco by installing solar systems for lighting and geysers including using some chargeable solar lamps in some cases, this will be cheaper in the long term” He added.

The Energy Regulation Board has revised upwards electricity tariffs for domestic and commercial uses based on consumer category consumption.
