Energy Expert implores government to exempt solar products from VAT

• Government should exempt solar products from import duty, VAT, and excise duty to reduce the cost of purchasing solar technology.
• Government can effect a 5% reduction in excise duty on locally produced solar panels.
• This approach can help promote the adoption of renewable energy sources and ensure energy security for the country.

An Energy Expert has called on government to consider implementing a tax waiver on solar products to reduce over reliance on hydro power and promote adoption of renewable energy sources.
Engineer Bornface Zulu told Money FM News that government should exempt solar products from import duty, value-added tax (VAT), and excise duty to reduce the cost of purchasing solar technology.
Engineer Zulu also stressed the need for government to provide incentives for local manufacturing and assembly of solar products, such as a 5% reduction in excise duty on locally produced solar panels.
“A tax waiver on solar products can encourage more people to adopt solar energy solutions, as lower prices can make solar technology more accessible and affordable for the general public.
“This can help Zambia reduce its reliance on hydro power and diversify its energy sources,” Engineer Zulu stated.
He added that by promoting solar energy, the country can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
“By promoting the adoption of solar energy, the country can reduce its dependence on imported fuel, improving air quality and reducing the risk of energy price volatility.” A tax waiver on solar products can incentivize local manufacturing and assembly, creating jobs and fostering economic growth in the renewable energy sector.”
“By implementing these policy initiatives, the Zambian government can take a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable energy future for the country,” he added.
