EU gives Zambia €58 million Covid-19 support

The European Union (EU) says it has mobilized 58 million Euros for Zambia towards the Covid-19 response.
Speaking on behalf of EU Ambassador to Zambia Jacek Jankowski during a Virtual Meeting with Health Minister Dr. Jonas Chanda, EU Charged de Affairs Bruno Hausens said € 8 Million will come from the EU while the € 50 Million is coming from its member states.
Mr. Hausens stated that EU has a long term partnership with government and Zambians, hence it stands ready to work with the country during the challenging Covid-19 period.
He said the Union has in recent years done a very considerable investment particularly in the health sector, adding that when the pandemic broke out in Zambia, EU was able to mobilize € 2.7 million support last year towards the purchase of essential medicines and lifesaving commodities.
Mr Hausens also pledged to support Zambia in COVID-19 vaccine communication strategy in order to ensure that the rollout of the vaccine is done effectively.
“The EU stands ready to work with the Zambian Government during this challenging time of the Pandemic. EU has a long term partnership with government and the people of Zambia. In particular in the health sector, we have done in recent years a very considerable investment. I would like to cite in particular the two flagship programs under the tenth European Development Fund.”
“When the Covid-19 broke out, we have also been able to mobilize support of initially 2.7 million Euros that we mobilized last year in order to procure essential medicines and lifesaving commodities. On top of this, we have recently been able to mobilize for Zambia additional support in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The amount is very sizeable and it amounts to 58 Million Euros,” Mr. Hausens stated.
And Health Minister Dr. Jonas Chanda pointed out that government recognizes the important role that the EU plays in addressing some of the challenges affecting the country’s health sector.
He further assured that the financial support been given to Zambia will be used transparently in order for it to benefit the majority Zambians.
Dr. Chanda thanked the EU for its continued support on the Covid-19 vaccine in Zambia and several areas in the Health Sector.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chanda disclosed that the country has in the last 24 hours recorded 9 Covid-19 related deaths with 854 new cases out of 4,864 tests conducted, bringing the death toll to 983, and cumulative cases to 71,677.
“The cases by province were reported from 211 Eastern, 144 Central, 125 Lusaka, 120 Southern, 70 Luapula, 60 North-western, 53 Northern, 34 Muchinga, 30 Copperbelt, and 7 Western. The cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date now stands at 71,677.”
“Sadly, we report an additional nine (09) new deaths from the following provinces: Copperbelt 4, Lusaka 2, Northern 2, and Eastern 1. The cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date now stands at 983, classified as 518 COVID deaths and 465 COVID-19 associated deaths,” he said.
He further stated that 431 people have been discharged from both home management and COVID-19 isolation facilities, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 64,040, while active cases now stand at 6,654.
Dr. Chanda said from the total active cases, 310 are admitted to various COVID-19 isolation facilities, with 229 on Oxygen therapy and 43 in critical condition, while the remaining 6,344 cases are under community management.
“The reducing numbers in our health facilities for COVID-19 patients have seen bed occupying rates of about 30% the lowest rates since the second wave of the pandemic started.”
