• Farmers can take advantage of commodities like ginger and onions which are on high demand with good prices.
• The need to grow what will give them money and profit.
• If farming becomes a business in the mindset of farmers, they will not be growing what everybody is growing.
An Agriculture Expert has urged farmers in rural areas to identify crops that are profitable such as Onion and ginger which are currently on high demand, attracting good prices.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Dr. Frank Kayula stated that farmers must realize that farming is a business, hence they must be able to produce commodities that will give them good profit, other than maize.
Dr. Kayula added that for a long time now, government and farmer Organizations have been educating rural farmers that farming is a profitable business if well harnessed, but many of them have not yet grasped the message as they tend to grow crops that everybody else is producing.
“For a long time now government has been promulgating the message that farming is a business and many NGOs and farmer organizations have been telling farmers that farming is a business, and if farming becomes a business in the mindset of farmers in rural areas they will not be growing what everybody is growing but they will grow that which will give them money. Of course maize is food security, but beyond maize, the farmers need to make money,” Dr. Kayula said.
He emphasized that farmers must be able to realize that they should not just grow a commodity because others are growing it but because it’s going to give them good money.
“Right now we can take advantage, you have seen how people are going in to buy commodities like ginger, where you see there is demand, step in quickly and make your money, if it doesn’t work well, move out and go for another crop. You can see how onion is also selling very well. The prices are super good,” he stated.
