Government keen to get Zambia’s economy back on its developmental path

Chief Government Spokesperson says Cabinet has expressed serious need for Government to get the economy back on its developmental path, partly, taking advantage of the approved 38-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) Programme for Zambia by International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the amount of Special Drawing Rights 978.2 million, equivalent to US$1.3 billion.

In a statement, Chushi Kasanda said Cabinet further expressed the need to dismantle the huge Government external and domestic debts inherited from the previous regime, which remain a serious burden on the general living standards of the people of Zambia.
Meanwhile, Ms. Kasanda, who is also Information and Media Minister, revealed that Cabinet has approved among others, the appointment of a seven member Board of Directors for the Zambia Tourism Agency in accordance with the provisions of the Tourism and Hospitality Act No. 13 of 2015.
She explained that the appointment of the Board will facilitate the marketing and promotion of Zambia as a tourist and travel destination and regulate the tourism industry as provided for by law.
“The Board will provide overall policy guidance and further facilitate the development of human resource in the tourism sector through academic and professional development, skills training, research and consultancy in the tourism sector, “Ms. Kasanda said.
Ms. Kasanda further disclosed that Cabinet has also approved the appointment of a six member Civil Aviation Authority Board of Directors in accordance with Part II Section 5 of the Civil Aviation Authority Act No. 7 of 2012.
“The Civil Aviation Authority is the core Aviation Regulator in Zambia. It was established in 2012 under the Civil Aviation Authority Act No. 7. Section 5 (1) of the Act provides for the Minister in charge of Aviation to appoint members of the Board. The Board was dissolved in October, 2021, therefore, there is need to appoint new Board Members to enable the institution to effectively discharge its functions as stipulated in the law,” she stated.
She added that Cabinet approved the appointment of a five member Board of Directors for the Accidents and Incidents Investigation Board and appointment of a six member Board of the National Biosafety Authority in accordance with Section 4 of the Biosafety Act Number 10 of 2007 following the dissolution of the previous Board in December, 2019.
The Minister said the resolutions were made during the 19th Cabinet Meeting held at State House, on Monday, 5th September, 2022 where a number of policy and legislative matters were discussed.
