Government says it will make efforts to improve infrastructure and equipment at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
Speaking to the media before touring UTH, Minister of Health Dr. Jonas Chanda has pledged to work tirelessly to improve healthcare services at the institution by making sure that all challenges such as leakages and water shortages are taken care of.
“I urge you to use me as I still have connections at the Ministry of Water and Sanitation to work on the water challenges the hospital is facing,” Dr Chanda said.
“I am very surprised to find that there are water problems at UTH because I never received complaints when I was Minister of Water and Sanitation but will work on it nonetheless”.
Dr. Chanda stated that the public has lost trust in the hospital because they are always referred to other institutions such as Levy Hospital due to poor equipment and inadequate bed space.
“I am aware of the some theatres not working and children are brought for operations and are referred to other hospitals for treatment and this makes parents complain to health workers,” Dr. Chanda said.
“This is not right and must be worked on.”
He explained that UTH has lost its standard due to these challenges and must therefore be worked on in order to gain public confidence in both the services and healthcare workers at the hospital.
“What I want to promote is a culture of transparency in the system,” he said.
And the Health Minister said he will not hesitate to fire those in the habit of stealing medical equipment and drugs in the hospital, conducting private laboratory services and other illegal activities.
“I’ve received reports of people in accounts asking for money from patients for quicker services and those selling drugs, let me make a warming that if you are found, you will be fired by myself personally.” Dr. Chanda said.
“We are not her to take advantage of our patients but to take care of them.”
