The Citizens Environmental and Social Concern-CESCo says Zambia needs to seriously consider prioritizing investments in Railway transport network because it is not only the most environmentally friendly way to travel or transport goods but is a sustainable mode of transportation.
Organization Executive Director Conwell Hakapya noted that when to compare and contrast with road and air transport there is enough evidence to demonstrate that rail transport is much more sustainable, in the Carbon Dioxide emissions, energy consumption, use of space, amount of cargo to move at a go, safety and congestion railway is always on top.
“Zambia needs to seriously consider prioritizing investments in our Railway transport network because railway transport is not only the most environmentally friendly way to travel or transport goods but if we compare and contrast railway with road and air transport there is enough evidence to demonstrate that the train is much more sustainable, whether, in terms of CO2 emissions, energy consumption, use of space, amount of cargo to move at a go, safety and congestion railway is always on top,” Mr Hakapya said.
Mr Hakapay adds that Zambia has joined the rest of the World in working to mitigate Climate Change by reducing emissions and the greenhouse effect of gas emissions per kilometre on railway transport is 80 per cent less than Vehicles especially Buses and Trucks.
He further said in most countries where railway transport is developed only less than 3 per cent of all transport gas emissions is emanated from trains.
“Zambia has joined the rest of the World in working to mitigate Climate Change by reducing our emissions we know that the greenhouse effect of gas emissions per kilometre on railway transport is 80% less than Vehicles especially Buses and Trucks, He explained.
“And in most countries where railway transport is developed only less than 3% of all transport gas emissions come from trains hence our calling for substantial investments in railway transport by acquiring new and efficient trains and also modernizing our dilapidated railway tracks”
