Govt auditing mines

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development says it is conducting an audit of mining firms in view of the retrenchments that the mines have been talking about following the introduction of new tax regime.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa says the government has started with North Western Province with a view of understanding the job cuts that the mines have been talking about.
Our Copperbelt Staffer Alick Nyankata reports that the minister says Cabinet has constituted a team of experts led by Permanent Secretaries from different government ministries who are conducting the audit of the mining firms.
He says the notices that the mines gave to the workers as well as the government through the Ministry of Labour are null and void.
Mr. Musukwa says time has gone when the government was sleeping and tolerating the mines to use the workers as a bait each time they are aggrieved with certain policies introduced by the state.
The Mines and Minerals Development Minister has also warned that the government will not tolerate the fake information that some mines are giving the government in view of the new tax system.
