Govt expected to increase budgetary allocation to water, sanitation

The Citizens Environmental and Social Concern (CESCo) is expecting the government to increase the budgetary allocation to the water and sanitation sector in the 2019 national budget.

CESCo Executive Director Conwell Hakapya tells Money FM News that his organization is expecting the Ministry of Finance to allocate a substantive amount to water and sanitation programs due to its importance in human development.

Mr. Hakapya says his organization is expecting a 100 percent increment expenditure for next year compared to the five hundred and sixty million kwacha in the 2018 national budget.

“If this is done, it will help the nation in eradicating the many water related challenges the people are facing in all the ten provinces,” he said.

He says it is also important that the government invests heavily in water and sanitation just like it has done in the road construction sector.

Mr. Hakapya states that in order to deal with waterborne diseases such as Cholera, dysentery, diarrhea among others, it is important that the water and sanitation sector receives more funding as compared to previous allocations.
