Govt urged to allow more mobile service providers

Economist Yusuf Dodia has advised the government to facilitate for the introduction of more mobile service providers in the country as this will help in stimulating Zambia’s economic growth.

Mr. Dodia says the government should support the growth of the private sector as this is one key sector to economic development and transformation of the country.

Mr. Dodia tells Money FM News via telephone that currently, Zambia has three mobile service providers with the fourth one coming soon as being awarded the license but that these are not enough to stimulate the much needed economic growth.

“We see the government operating like as a command economy controller by deciding on players in the telecommunication industry,” he said.

He feels that this is undermining the growth of the telecommunication industry in Zambia.

Mr. Dodia states that there is need to allow more players in the telecommunication industry as this would result in more competition in mobile service provision thereby reducing the cost of mobile services in Zambia.

He cites the recently announced 30 ngwee internet calls tariff as a measure to protect the mobile service providers despite these providers offering bad services to the consumers.
