International Coaching Commissioner tips Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team

  • Women’s Wheelchair Basketball is in South Africa for training workshop
  • Team will play in the 2023 African Paralympic Games in Ghana in September
  • Coaching commissioner training the team on offense and defense tactics

An international coaching commissioner has tipped the Zambia Women’s Wheelchair national Basketball team ahead of their participation at the inaugural African Para Games in Ghana.

The 2023 African Paralympic Games will take place in Accra between the 3- 12 September.

The wheelchair basketball competition will be the 2023 African Championships to decide which African nation proceeds to the IWBF Paris 2024 Repechage Tournaments next April.

Speaking during the ongoing Training Camp, Maxwell McLean, also serving as coaching manager of the Southern African says the Zambian Women Wheelchair Basketball team needs to ‘tidy up’ on a few things that will help them perfect their tactical approach.

McLean said he is currently working on the defense and shooting aspect with the Zambian women’s team, whom he has described as a vibrant side. He adds that the defense and the shooting aspects are a major aspect that makes teams to win or lose games.

“Nice, young and vibrant team that is full of energy. Few things which we need to tidy up with them, that is the basic fundamentals of the game, which is the skills,” McLean said.

“Once you get the skills right that is, bouncing the ball, pushing the chair, shooting and finishing off, then you won’t be able to get on the heavy staff, which is tactical. It is tactics that win the game, and not so much the skills but if you don’t have skills then you can’t do the tactical.”

McLean has urged the Zambian Women’s team to continue working on the skills that they will acquire during the training camp.

“With the Zambian ladies team, we are working on the shooting and defense of skills. In my opinion as a senior coach, if you can’t defend your key restricted areas and let the opposition get in, it is game over and if you can’t shoot either protected or unprotected shoots then it is game over,” McLean stated.

He adds, “Once we work on the defense and offense, then the Zambian ladies team will be competitive, let’s see what happens when we go to Ghana. It doesn’t stop here, once they get back to Zambia they have to work on the skills that we are teaching here.”

McLean also revealed that the Zambian team will be given additional learning material that would help them adequately prepare for the upcoming African Para-Games.

He further disclosed that the Zambian technical bench will be assisted with video analysis during the African Games in Ghana in September to help them effectively executive games plans.

The Zambian Women’s Wheelchair national team arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa last Friday for training camp which will come to a close on Wednesday, 2nd August, 2023. The training camp serves as part of preparations for the upcoming championships.

Zambia are in Group A of the 2023 Women’s African Champions alongside Algeria, Kenya and Nigeria. Group B comprises of the hosts Ghana, South Africa, DR Congo and Morocco.
