Kariba rose 3 Centi Metres.

Zambezi River Authority says despite the increase in rainfall activities in the Kariba catchment area, there has been no significant rise in the Lake levels leaving it constraint to power generation.

Speaking during a press briefing on the water levels for power generation at Kariba in Lusaka, Authority Chief Executive Officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa on Friday said “the lake level at Kariba rose by 3 Cent Metres between 7th and 21st February 2020.

Engineer Munodawafa said the recorded increase in the lake levels is attributed to the increased inflows into the lake as a result of the improved rains.

He said as at 21st February 2020, the recorded lake level at Lake Kariba was 4777.01 meters, with 6.7 Billion Cubic Meters of Usable storage.

The Engineer however said that “this recorded volume of stored usable water is seventy six percent lower than that recorded on the same date last year.”

He added that the Authorities hydrological simulations have indicated that the lake level is likely to reach a peak in June 2020 where the lake will at 478 meters.

Engineer Munodawafa said the predicted peak is “3 meters above the minimum operating level with 23% live storage.”
