The Mine Workers Union of Zambia urges government not to tolerate Konkola Copper Mines to scale down on operations
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, has stopped operations at its Nchanga mine in Zambia after the introduction of import duties on copper concentrates.
KCM told its employees that operations are being stopped from 4th January, 2019 due to a fall in the availability of acid after the Nchanga smelter operations were rationalised.
But Union President Joseph Chewe has told Money FM News via telephone from Copperbelt that government must be firm when handling this matter.
Mr. Chewe says KCM is sitting on ten million Copper Ore at its Konkola Deep Mining Project that needs to be exploited.
He says government must hold KCM accountable over certain decisions the mining firm is making.
He says the union is not in support of this decision that has been reached by the mining firm.
