Legalizing Imports on GMOs Risk on Consumers

The Africa Consumer Union has charged that legalizing the importation of Genetically Modified Organisms on the Zambian Market Poses a risk to Zambian Consumers.
ACU First Vice President Muyunda Ililonga says scientific research shows that these products are not yet certified safe for human consumption.
The Ministry of Health says the ban on the importation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is no longer in effect.
Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya says the ban on GMOs was effected because Zambia does not have capacity to handle GMOs due to lack of human resource as well as appropriate infrastructure.
Dr. Chilufya says another reason is the absence of adequate policy and legal framework to guide the use and application of modern biotechnology.
Mr. Ililonga has however maintained that the country Does not have the capacity to test the safety of the products and hence it is unsafe to allow the imports until the country develops the capacity.
