The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says Local authorities should regularly monitor the activities of night clubs to ensure that the businesses do not involve themselves in illegal activities.
ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala has cited the smoking of a tobacco popularly known as Shisha as one such activity, which he says has increased in clubs especially among the youth.
Mr. Sakala says the owners of night clubs around the city have allowed people to carry on with the activity contrary to the county’s public health laws
He says Local authorities should ensure that law breakers are punished as the practice endangers the lives of the smokers and the innocent people subjected to second-hand-smoke.
Smoking of tobacco in public is prohibited under the Local Government Regulations issued under Statutory Instrument No. 39 of 2008 in conjunction with the Public Health Act Chapter 295 as amended and the Public Health (Tobacco) Regulations, 1992 issued under Statutory Instrument No. 163 of 1992.
