Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development says the construction of the Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba road in Northern Province is expected to cost 8.4 million US dollars.
Speaking in Parliament, Charles Milupi said government will consider upgrading the road to bituminous standard once funds for the project are available.
Mr. Milupi stated that the 120 kilometer stretch is currently being upgraded to an engineering gravel road and the contractor is already on site.
“Government will consider upgrading to bituminous standard the Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba road in Northern Province once funds for the project have been secured. The estimated cost for the current cost of the Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba road is 8 million and 40 thousand US dollars,” he said.
He added that the estimated completion period of the project is 60 months, which comprises 24 months for rehabilitation and 36 months for maintenance.
And Mr. Milupi revealed that the Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba road is part of the output and performance based road contracts of approximately 3,017 kilometers of roads, covering Copperbelt, Central, Northwestern and Western provinces at a cost of US$312 million.
“Works on the road are part of the project called Output and Performance Based Road Contracts for design, rehabilitation/improvement and routine and periodic maintenance of approximately 3,017 kilometers of roads not only in Northern province but also in Copperbelt, Central, Northwestern and Western provinces.”
“The total cost for the entire project covering 3,017 kilometers of roads is US$312, 048, 579 million, and works on Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba road which is 120 kilometers is envisaged to cost 8 million 40 thousand US dollars, the contractor is on site and works are ongoing.
