Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has c allied on Government to disband the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) due to what it terms as failure to deliver on its mandate.
Organization Director General Dr. Quince Mwabu told Money FM News that MQHZ’s independent investigations on the operations of the Authority indicate that members of the insurance scheme who are mostly Civil Servants are only receiving prescriptions whenever they visit NHIMA accredited health institutions.
Dr. Mwabu stated that it is unfortunate that despite the Authority allegedly failing to secure quality healthcare for its members, thousands of Public Service Workers have continued to suffer financial deductions on their pay slips.
“Our independent investigations on the operations of NHIMA have revealed that members of this insurance scheme, who are mostly poor Civil servants, are only receiving prescriptions whenever they visit NHIMA accredited health institutions.”
“They are merely getting these pieces of paper after standing in lines for hours. This is unacceptable,” Dr. Mwabu said.
He said it was the organization’s hope that the formation of national insurance scheme could have helped many Zambians to access equitable and quality healthcare.
“As an organization that promotes provision of quality healthcare in Zambia, we hoped that this national insurance scheme could have helped many Zambians to access equitable and quality healthcare. However, the current shape of NHIMA has left a lot of frustrations and financial scars among Zambian workers, it must be abolished ,” he emphasized.
Efforts to get a comment from NHIMA Public Relations Department proved futile.
